1. Should I buy a bicycle helmet if I plan on riding on the streets, (ie commuting to work, after covid riding to down town, or on the bike trails)?
2. Any recommendations for someone who has a large cranium?
3. Something not too expensive?
4. Bought a helmet, with MIPS

1. I’d recommend a helmet any time on a bike. When the crumple zone is your body, you might as well wear a helmet.
2. I use a Garneau Olympus, my head is also large . https://www.evanscycles.com/en-us/louis-garneau-olympus-helmet-EV151948 Not sure if they’re still in production but it also fit your 3rd point in that it wasn’t too costly from what I remember (I bought it years ago).
I’ve never actually measured my head, but I’m judging from the fact that I’ve passed on buying countless baseball caps I’ve wanted because they didn’t fit properly, and any flexfit type caps require me to take the largest size. I’ve never bought a properly fitted cap because I don’t know how freaking large my head is so I stick with adjustible/flexfit where possible.
Hopefully this helps.

Yes and you should be able to find something at Walmart or off Amazon for cheap. I’m sure you can find some sizing guides as well.

you should....really...its safer... that said i dont for cycling about..i only gear up if at an event that mandates it...or planning something particularly stupid
i have a bell traverse
its comfy..... but i havent hit anything hard enough to find out how good it really is yet..
it is a bit light for my liking tho (i kinda feel a helmet should have some weight to it....its not exactly rational)

You should get a helmet. They are cheap insurance.

Based on what I know about you t here isn’t an argument against using one for riding on busy public roads. That equation has changed over the years with amount of drivers, speeds they carry, and modern distractions used behind the wheel.
Shape of your head is more important than size. There should be ample budget choices that don’t sacrifice on quality for any shape and size. Make sure to spend as much time as necessary adjusting the straps so it actually works if it is needed.
Definitely something inexpensive for a 15 mile commute. Luckily on this end many are going to have features of road and mtb helmets combined such as a removable visor. Make sure to check the manufactured on date on the helmet . Foam gets old and will not work as well.

Walmart isn’t an appropriate place to find an adults helmet. Amazon is questionable based on who the seller actually is.

The bell end is where the most blood is. I mean your head always has more blood than anywhere else.
I’m still impressed with that tire. H ope he picks your for the user edition of JRitS. So give that post a wrenching tag.

Whatever everyone else said. They’re cheap, light, and they might save your life. Saved mine.
You can spend $200 or $30, but it doesn’t really matter. A s long as they meet the ANSI and Snell ratings, they will do the job. I like Bell. They are a good name, durable, and inexpensive. I prefer to go to a bike shop instead of a department store, simply because there is more selection of better quality so you can get a good fit. But whatever you do, go get a lid!

I don’t wear a helmet when I go around the neighborhood with my kids, but I do when I commute or ride on my own in the woods. I wear a Bern which ‘fell off a truck's when my buddy worked there

Getting one was a good call. I’ve bounced my head just riding on the street before, and was very glad to be protected.

Yes, you should wear one. I went over the bars when I hit a dog a number of years ago. The bike was broken. My hand was broken. My ribs were cracked. But my head wasn’t busted because my helmet took the hit for me.

Oh yeah. Cheap out on protection for your head. The second most favorite part of your body. I’m in traction but I saved 20 bucks! The old I’m-in-the-neighborhood-so-I-go-bareheaded. Wrong headed. I thought that way and spent 5 days in ICU with a split open head. Now I wear a helmet to go downstairs and get the paper. Don’t make me send you the photos of my head in the ER... Seriously Signal 30!

Yes get a helmet. Your local bicycle shop should have a good selection. Please don’t buy a walmart or target crap helmet. I like helmets, they are so nice these days they are as much protection as a fashion state ment.

Do note that Dutch bicycle infrastructure is very different from North American bike infrastructure. In NL bikes and cars tend to be separated. The US has no infrastructure, other than car infrastructure (very mild hyperbole). When you crash, you crash due to black ice or something like that. You’ll risk breaking your collar bone. Elsewhere, where cars and bikes share the road, you run the risk of getting hit by a car. Your head is much more at risk there.
I have never worn a helmet on a bicycle in my life, not as far as I can remember. Yet I cycle all the time. In NL when a casual biker wears a helmet, it’s either a tourist or an expat. However, in the US even I would certainly wear one.
